Student Answer

Majority of people believe that spec exploration is extremely expensive and money should be invested for more important aspects of life. In my opinion, I agree that exploring something is a good deal, however there are other things which need much money, namely food/water deficiency and environmental problems.

It is well-known that many poor and developing countries are scarce of food and clean water. For example, many people from Africa die due to food deficiency. I’m sure if the money will be spent on such things, there will not be untreatable diseases such as AIDS, ebola. When people are hungry, they might drink contaminated water and eat infected animals which will lead to spread of the diseases.

Ecological problems are becoming the most significant issues in the world today. Big cities as Beijing and Hong Kong are full of smog for many years. People wear a mask and even purchase fresh air from Switzerland not to be poisoned by the smog. Therefore much money should be invested for these probems as they may concern other countries.

In summary, in spite that space exploration needs to be developed, other worldwide issues should be solved first.

Task Response: 6 – 1 = 5

The main issue here is that this essay is too short. Always make sure you write more than 240 words. At the moment, this essay would lose at least 1 for this reason.
You answer the questions. You have a straightforward introduction and a conclusion.
Each body paragraph has a clear main idea. But you really need to develop each idea some more. Try to have two clear supporting ideas for each body paragraph and at least two sentences for each supporting idea.
However, the conclusion doesn’t really summarize your main points and it doesn’t directly answer the question as much as it could. To make it better, write something like:
“To summarize, the undeveloped world needs a huge amount of investment to solve its water and food problems, and cities around the world need to deal with their terrible air pollution. Therefore, although space exploration maybe useful, I believe we need to spend money on these global issues before we invest in space.”
You use some linkers, and you have some reference links too e.g. “these problems”

Coherence and Cohesion: 6

The essay is fairly easy to follow and is logical overall.
You use some linkers, and you have some reference links too e.g. “these problems”
Your essay would be better if you included linking phrases at the beginning of each body paragraph e.g. “First of all”, “Another issue is …”

Lexical Resource (Vocabulary): 7

You generally have enough vocabulary to do the task, and you have some good choices of words such as “untreatable diseases”
You generally have good control over your spelling, and word formation. e.g. “contaminated”
You only have a couple of odd choices of language “For example, many people from Africa die due to food deficiency” “… Africa die from food deficiency”

Grammatical range and accuracy : 7

You generally have a good range of complex language and you use the passive well.
Basic punctuation is letting you down a bit. Remember to put commas after your linkers e.g. : Therefore, …
Some minor things to remember:
“much money” more money
“people wear a mask” people wear masks

Overall : 6 ~ 6.5

You will probably get a 6 ~ 6.5 for this, but if your answer was longer, a tighter conclusion, more idea development, and some linking between paragraphs, you would definitely get a 7.

IELTS Task 2 Sample Answer

Recently, large numbers of of people have become concerned about spending our resources on exploring space. The question is, is investing in space exploration a good use of money, or would we be better off spending it on our lives here on Earth? This essay will argue that more needs to be done on Earth first.

To start with, too many of our people lack basic nutrition and access to clean water. Firstly, millions of people are starving despite the fact that the rich world is suffering from an obesity epidemic. For example, many African children die from starvation, or although they may have enough food to get through early childhood, the lack of basic nutrients, such as vitamins, means they are stunted and are more limited intellectually. Similarly, poor access to clean water for drinking, bathing, cooking, and sanitation means that diseases spread rapidly through the population. Cholera is an awful example of this. Sadly, all of these problems are readily preventable with a portion of the resources we devote to space.

Furthermore, it cannot be denied that we face a tremendous number of ecological problems in the world today. One area is air pollution. Global megacities, such as Beijing and Hong Kong, have suffered from this for years. People wear masks and even purchase fresh air from Switzerland so as not to be poisoned by the smog. Another area of concern is global warming and the destruction of the oceans. Mankind is destroying its home.

In conclusion, regardless of any scientific or economic benefits that may come from exploring space, it is obvious that humanity needs to invest its scarce resources at home first. I believe we cannot look outwards while our children suffer from preventable diseases and poor nutrition, and while we let our planet die.

  1. hello sir can give me some suggestions .space exploration is much too expensive and the money should be spent on more important things. Do you agree?
In this sophisticated world study of space gaining more importance. It is true that this research programmes cost a big fortune to the hosting nations. This essay will argue that this money can be better used first for the benefits of its citizens and ecosystem.

To begin with, government should spend money for people to get nutritious food and clean drinking water. For example,in many unfortunate countries adults and children die because of starvation, lack of nutrients in the food and unclean drinking water. This is a major issue because nutritious food and good water supplies are some of the basic necessities of a person. To solve this problem, authorities must invest more in this sector rather than spending a lot of money on space investigation while their citizens face to death due to lack of basic necessities. As a result, country will face reduced number of mortality and morbidity rates and increased economic status of the country.

Further more, many nations have social menaces like sand, water ,air pollutions. Despite expend money to sort out this problems which affect the ecosystem government is concerned about space. To illustrate this ,in my country people do not have facilities for waste management there for they dump rubbish in river or along sides of roads and so on not only that but also because of the heap of litters in the city centres people need to wear mask to avoid the smell.Noticeably, the government is not taking any active steps to sort this pollution problems. Therefore, protection of our earth comes first compared to a piece of research in space.

In conclusion, although there are scientific and economic benefits from studying space , government should invest in the scarce resources of its nations as a priority. In my opinion, money should spend for agriculture, education, well fare services, food and water supplywaste management and housing .

    1. Hi Neenua,

This is a very good essay. Generally, you answer the question well. Here are few minor improvements you could make. I put the minor changes in bold.

In this sophisticated world, the study of space is gaining more importance. It is true that this research programmes are hugely expensive for the hosting nations. This essay will argue that this money can be better used first for the benefits of its citizens and the ecosystem.

To begin with, the government should spend money for people to get nutritious food and clean drinking water. For example,in many unfortunate countries adults and children die because of starvation, lack of nutrients in the food and unclean drinking water. This is a major issue because nutritious food and good water supplies are some of the basic necessities of a person. [To solve this problem, authorities must invest more in this sector rather than spending a lot of money on space investigation while their citizens face to death due to lack of basic necessities. – You don’t need this part] As a result, country will face reduced number of mortality and morbidity rates and increased economic status [of the country].

Furthermore, many nations have social menaces like sand, water ,air pollutions. Despite expending money to sort out this problems which affect the ecosystem, [comma here!] government is concerned about space. To illustrate this ,in my country people do not have facilities for waste management there for they dump rubbish in river or along sides of roads and so on not only that but also because of the heap of litters in the city centres people need to wear mask to avoid the smell [simplify this sentence – split it into shorter ones]. Noticeably, the government is not taking any active steps to sort this pollution problems. Therefore, protection of our earth comes first compared to a piece of research in space.

In conclusion, although there are scientific and economic benefits from studying space , government should invest in the scarce resources of its nations as a priority. In my opinion, money should spend for agriculture, education, welfare services, food and water supplywaste management and housing

Make sure your practice using “commas”! Rememeber to leave a gap after the comma.

  2. Hi ben…. can you please correct my essay and give your valuable suggestions….

Space is the least explored area. Very little is known about it as its research involves huge amounts. While many countries are allotting considerable share of their GDP into space research, philanthropists and socialists are of opinion that it would be better to spend money on more important and essential things like food security and health insurance. I feel space research has both advantages and disadvantages and this essay discusses on it.
On the one hand, there are many benefits in space research, even though it would be more expensive initially. Moon and other planets do not belong to any one nation. If we are able to find any life sustainable resources there, it may become alternative destinations for humans in future. One more thing is availability of rare but costly minerals like Uranium or Platinum. If we could find such minerals on any planet, it will surely boost up our economic growth. Finally, we are sending so many satellites into space, so that they provide us accurate information on weather or predicting calamities. They also play a vital role in directing the navigation either in air or on water or on road.
However, as already told space research needs millions of dollars. In low income or underdeveloped nations, it is not acceptable to spend such huge amounts on it, keeping aside the most essential things like food supply and health insurance. When people are dying of famine or draught, it is unwise to divert the funds to space research. To make health care facilities more accessible and free of cost, only a fraction of budget for space exploration is needed.
In conclusion, although space exploration has many benefits to the nation, in view of its extortionate budget needs, it should be carried out only in moderate to high income countries. So, I strongly disagree with space exploration unless the basic needs of the people are dealt with properly.
